Facing an increase in customer orders, Zoll Medical Corporation, pioneers in AED (Automated External Defibrillator) device manufacturing, needed to find solutions to keep up with the recent growth in business. Zoll also needed to increase capacity while maintaining its current stockroom footprint, without occupying revenue producing manufacturing operations or office spaces.

Zoll turned to Boston Industrial to optimize their global distribution operations for Resuscitation products within their Chelmsford, MA facility. Careful analysis of spatial utilization and desired throughput growth identified solutions for a new finished goods operation that produced a substantial increase in storage density and output. Key changes were improved aisle patterns, workflow, and the addition of carton flow and pallet flow racking. The resulting racked layout increased capacity by over 30%, and promoted a more defined slotting strategy to house products based on several criteria elements, including overall inventory size, product class, velocity, and order type.

Zoll is now able to flow product quickly from order conception to shipping without delays, improving customer satisfaction. Other notable improvements required the participation of upstream production, where parts are now placed into foam-lined storage bins to reduce material handling during put-away and picking.

Boston Industrial assisted Zoll with detailed analysis, storage system design, and provided procurement and slotting assistance to support the inventory transition implementation.
