RMS Medical Goes To Lean Manufacturing

946314_187145354795404_912164936_nNew construction and renovation projects abound at Boston Industrial. There continues to be growth in the development of manufacturing facilities under our professional management, showcasing the trend of stimulated growth in the economy. One of our latest projects was with RMS Medical, located in Chester, NY. Boston Industrial managed the Lean Manufacturing transformation via training and Kaizen events. The goal of this project was to create a more streamlined approach to throughput, employee productivity and product quality.

Through the reduction of waste within the manufacturing process, Boston Industrial assisted RMS in eliminating 40 percent of the material handling steps, in addition to 75 percent of hand-recording steps. This change was accomplished through value stream mapping and the internal parts supermarket implementation. The main challenge of this particular project was that the old methods and legacy thinking had to be converted to the Lean thought process for manufacturing. Completed in October 2014, this transition to ‘being Lean’ involved the internal team at RMS Medical embracing the new methods, in addition to smaller lot sizes and parts stockroom. As a result of the Boston Industrial training, RMS was able to produce the first lot within half of the cycle time of previous production efforts, which was a win-win for everyone.

Topic: ROWA RAX Automated Storage and Retrieval System
Upcoming at Boston Industrial is the implementation and utilization of the ROWA RAX Automated Storage and Retrieval System. An innovative approach to U.S. manufacturing systems, the AS/RS system has been a fixture in Europe for years. There it is used for the handling of smaller packages associated with the health and beauty aid sector. In early 2015, the system will be implemented into one of Boston Industrial’s clients which will serve as the flagship location in the U.S. for this technology.
